Auckland Sustainable Cities Programme. A regional partnership with the Sustainable Development Programme of Action

Urban Centres and Economic Performance

Objective:
Central government and the Auckland region local councils working together with the aim to better understand the nature of the Auckland region economy, and its drivers, and to provide a better understanding of the role of cities and urban areas in economic development.

Relative to the other workstrands, the specific project under this workstrand commenced later, in 2005. It was agreed that, together, agencies needed to gain a good knowledge of the drivers of economic development as a basis upon which to fully assess the design, development and implementation of interventions that could be effective in lifting economic growth.

Through this project, the Ministry of Economic Development carried out a stock-take of existing information to help understand the current situation and to identify gaps. In addition, it established a reference group, made up of local and central government representatives and other stakeholders, to inform the project and also the next phase of the work that will result.

This project has assisted in providing a shared information base for central government and the councils in the Auckland region to use in further work. The project has also provided a platform for central and local government to share knowledge on the drivers of economic development and to learn some new, cross-cutting ways to work together.
