The objective of the Transport and Urban Form (TUF) Workstrand of Sustainable Cities was to “build and foster Auckland region urban communities where sustainable transport choices are the norm.”
The projects of this workstrand were aimed at addressing three key transport issues for the region namely, school travel, air pollution from vehicle emissions and the provision of better public transport services.
Central government and local councils were working together on the projects. The workstrand was led by the Ministry of Transport (MoT) and North Shore City Council.
The Workstrand undertook work in the following areas:
- Accelerating School Travel Plans – This project developed school travel plans across the Auckland region aimed at specifically reducing car trips to school and finding ways to increase other travel choices such as walking and cycling.
- Air Quality/Bus Emissions Monitoring – The focus of this project was on reducing and monitoring emissions from the region’s diesel bus fleets through a trial installation of catalytic converters on buses. The project also identified opportunities to support the MoT’s Vehicle Emission Policy (VEP) programme.
- Passenger Transport (PT) Procurement – This project reviewed the national legislation that governs how commercial and contracted public transport services are delivered in the region. The aim of the project was to determine if improvements to the legislation are needed to help the region deliver a more effective and integrated PT system.
